About the Broadbridges

Edward Broadbridge has a long and rich history behind him, in which he has delved deeply into both the technical and the semantic foundation of all types of translation, while constantly expanding the cultural horizon. Here are just a few of the elements that has formed Edward Broadbridge as a professional translator:

Edward

He has been teachers of English for 40 year.

Edward is a walking dictionary in English-Danish, with his native English knowledge in combination with his training and long experience – a cultural stamp which in a translation context gives an invaluable sensitivity to the meaning and etymology of words. Broadbridge manages not only many assignments; the work always goes in depth to find the absolutely right nuance for the sender’s message and the receiver’s understanding.

Assignments

Today his work has branched out in a number of directions: in business life (presentations, spoken word, etc.), theological and church assignments, talks, courses, art, literature, and cultural presentations.

Take LEGO, for instance. Edward recalls one of his highspots:
”At a few hours’ notice LEGO called me in to translate a text and make a video film to convince Windsor Town Council in England that the first Legoland outside Denmark should be built in Windsor. The assignment was deeply confidential. So just like the meterorologists in Danish TV I had to stand in front of map that I couldn’t see at all and sell LEGO’s idea to Windsor. Not only did we succeed, there are also a couple of LEGO-figures in the park in England that carry my voice!”

Broadbridge has made not only commercial translations; the firm also works with legal documents for the Ministry of Justice and the judicial system as well as translations of theological texts where the demands for etymological understanding and linguistic precision are at the very highest level.

Church work

Edward have worked in St. Clement’s Church, Randers, for 40 years. He worked as a leader in the children’s club, Club Clemens. This has led to pioneer work in biblical story-telling and Christian-based subjects. Edward has written and directed a long range of musicals, and leads 1-day courses in composition and production of such musicals.

Bridge-builders

On the work-front Edward Broadbridge see it as a great advantage that he runs his business from home. Overheads are low, which allows for a relatively low price level. In the education sector resources are often limited, yet at the same time the level, especially in the higher teaching institutions, is professionally demanding.

Here Broadbridge has the full capacity to deliver the real article at the right price. In business he know that internet pages have replaced or supplemented previous forms of presentation, and he is used to working under pressure.

”I meet all my deadlines, and i do not leave an assignment before the customer is satisfied. As my name (coincidentally!) implies, i am a bridge-builder between Danish and English. And there are two lanes in each direction.”

About the Broadbridges

Edward and Hanna Broadbridge have a long and rich history behind them, in which they have delved deeply into both the technical and the semantic foundation of all types of translation, while constantly expanding the cultural horizon. Here are just a few of the elements that have formed the couple’s background as professional translators:

Edward & Hanna

They have both been teachers of English for 40 year. Each has a strength in their background; Hanna is a walking dictionary in Danish-English, with her native Danish knowledge in combination with her training and long experience – a cultural stamp which in a translation context give an invaluable sensitivity to the meaning and etymology of words. For many years Hanna has also been a university external examiner in the various translation disciplines.

Edward has the same expertise as Hanna but just the other way round; they complement each other in their joint work. Broadbridge manages not only many assignments; the work always goes in depth to find the absolutely right nuance for the sender’s message and the receiver’s understanding.

In regard to such assignments, Hanna says:
”Language is such an important part of the message; a single nuance can be crucial. The assignments for the national police, including translations for court cases and simultaneous interpretation during the hearings demand the soundest precision. A translation of Grundtvig’s hymns into singable English versions must also be able to enthuse an English congregation! And they do. We have seen it with our own eyes.”
